Seize her
I am really trying to get more information as to what happened at David’s residential facility the other day. I know he had a significant seizure while in the school and I know that an aide or two literally ran with him in his wheelchair back to the residence, from the school.
Yesterday I learned another tidbit. The school nurse was called from the classroom and she refused to respond.
Now, I know what you are thinking. “Come on Single Dad, what is it with you and school nurses?” Damn good question, I have no freaking clue as to the answer.
Last evening I sent the following email to the doctor in charge of the residence and cc’d the head of nursing, the chief doctor at the facility, and the Student Services Coordinator. They all read it before 9 am, no one has responded.
I learned today that while David was having a significant seizure in his classroom a few days ago, the school nurse was called and specifically chose not to respond to him nor render aid.
My question is, was her decision to not respond and not render any aid according to then established protocol or was it a violation of then established protocol?
Additionally, what is the nurse’s name?
Thank you for any and all clarification.
Wait until you see my follow-up.
The truth is, I really hate this shit. But I cannot just ignore it.
UGH.
(That’s all I wanted to say, but it was too short to submit.)
I’m behind you all the way on this. What is the school nurse’s job description? What is she there to do all day? Her response to the situation is simply unacceptable.
If it were anyone else I’d think you made this up. Crud.
And you shouldn’t ignore it!
Holy cow! What is it with school nurses over there? What’s the point? Fire them all and just tell the staff to call for an ambulance. I’m a nurse and these stories just make my blood boil.
Of course you can’t ignore it. You are doing what you need to do for your kids. That’s just being a good parent.
Very strange. I’m a school nurse and that would definitely not fly here. Sounds like there’s more to the story–I sure hope so, anyway. My son has seizures, and I would be livid if I were in your shoes. What state are you in?
I hope the nurse was indisposed dealing with a child who was either bleeding to death or on fire. Or perhaps that she was, herself, on fire at the time.
This just takes me back to the thing you said WAY back about what school nurses are proof of. By the way…my mother LOVES that joke. It busts her up every time I remind her of it.
Rachel’s comment: hee hee hee!
Rachel’s comment is priceless. The nurse certainly has some ‘splainin’ to do.
How you have dealt with such idiots without slapping one of them is beyond me.
Maybe they should also provide you with a job description for the nurse. If not helping a child who is having a seizure is protocol, what is she there for??? Our school nurse likes to send my daughter home when she is being difficult, “ooohhh I think she has a temperature, you should come get her!” My heart goes out to you and David.
Being a school nurse sounds like a great gig. You get your own little room with nifty posters on the walls and loads of free band-aids, tongue depressors and syringes and you can sit on your duff all day ignoring the pesky brats who try and get attention by bleeding, vomiting, seizing and cracking their little heads open on the jungle gym. Money for jam, as our British friends say!
Most schools don’t have nurses, not in this economy. The ones that do are usually because of special health care needs or disabilities, and the pay is at the bottom of the scale. Don’t know about Single Dad’s son’s school, they may well be sitting around, and I don’t speak for other people. Here in my neck of the woods, I don’t even have time to take a lunch. I eat a quick PB n J every day while I’m charting.
Why do I work in the lowest paying job in my field? Mainly so that I can be with my own disabled son when he’s out of school, but also because I enjoy the kids and already have decades of hospital shifts under my belt.
But hey, degrading entire groups of people (nurses) due to the failures of a few seems to be a favorite pastime these days.
I personally get an enormous kick out of degrading entire groups of people, especially self righteous health care workers who should know better than to scarf down peanut butter and jelly sandwiches when a lunch of raw veggies and tofu is much more nutritious and far less fattening.
